I'm reading the manual and it says the higher my AC the better. In the section on armor, pages 102-103, it says the light armors have higher armor shield bonuses, between 4 and 8. The heavy armor all has between 0 & 1 ASB & shields appear to have no ASB. What is the point of a shield? Plus the heavy armors allow for higher dexterity bonuses, which makes no sense.

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Lynchden: Any clarification would be greatly appreciated.
The handbook accidentally swapped column headers ;-D On page 102-103 swap "Max Dex" with "Armor/Shield Bonus" to get the correct tables. (E.g. Padded armor gives you an armor bonus of +1 and allows a maximal Dexterity bonus of 8, while a Buckler grants +1 shield bonus and doesn't affect Dexterity bonus)

Just for clarification:
Your Armor Class (AC) represents how hard it is for opponents to land a solid, damaging blow on you. It’s the attack roll result that an opponent needs to achieve to hit you. Your AC is equal to the following:
10 + armor bonus + shield bonus + Dexterity modifier + size modifier
Armor often limits your Dexterity bonus (see "Max Dex"), so if you are wearing armor, you might not be able to apply your whole Dexterity bonus to your AC.

As DeMignon mentions, this is an error in the manual. The rules are based on the 3.5 edition of Dungeons and Dragons, and the correct armor tables can be found here.

There's a lot of complexity there, and trade-offs at every level. Personally I just put a chain shirt on everyone in my party and call it a day; the chain shirt is the heaviest armor that doesn't incur a move speed penalty, and unless you've got a character with 20 or higher dexterity there's not much reason to wear anything lighter.
