Recently I decided to give the game a second chance; it had a lot of good in it, but my party was shit. This time I've tackled the game with a trio, and am faring quite nicely now that I know which feats to give to my frontman. But I digress: I decided to play this time with the C08 NC (new content) version, and if my memory serves correct, the latest update was released not further than last February (7.7.0).

I'm at the Temple level two at the moment (the one with water, air and fire sub-temples), and...this is not looking good. I mean from a technical point of view. I cannot return to level one, or dive into level three, because the game will crash to desktop if I try that. Also, there's a room with tons of bugbears somewhere to the northeast: if I go there, the game will crash to desktop after a few of the bugbears have moved.

I think my only hope at this point, is to gain one more level...somehow....and hope that I get the spell Teleport to go with it (my next level will be level nine, I think), find a place where I can rest, rest without a crash, and hope the spell lets me get the hell out of the Temple without crashing.

Has anyone else ran into the same problem? When I finished the game the first time in February / March 1st, I played with the Co8 7.6.0 version (no new content) and it definitely didn't have this many crash issues and I was able to finish just fine.

Also, I worry if I'm able to finish the game at all. Let's say I do get the spell Teleport, and am able to get to Nulb safely... but what if the game will never let me enter the Temple Level three :E
I installed the Co8 mod just last week, and have mostly cleared the 2nd dungeon level and peeked at the 3rd dungeon level (I returned to town in my most recent save), so it's probably something that happened to you.

What I've read indicates that despite the best efforts of modders the game still has stability and save corruption issues and keeping multiple saves going back some distance is highly recommended. Do you have an older save you can go back to?
Yes, I do have older saves (I use a different save for every floor, for example). I've read enough of the game's technical problems to know that having lots of saves could come in handy when least expected. Kinda like now. Sucks though, if I have to do so much stuff again, like clearing out half the sub-temples. So I was wondering, if there's some workaround to fix this (if the teleport spell won't work).
Found a console command that would allow me to teleport to Hommlet from anywhere. Decided to try it out, and guess what. Crash to desktop.

I think I'm going to give up. I really want to like the game, but the game doesn't want to like me. First it was too difficult, now it's the constant crashing. Oh well :p

The game seems balanced around the presumption that you're rolling for high stats, power-building your characters, and applying lots of good tactics in combat. I'm running a pretty heavily power-built party and still running into challenging fights (mind you, I arrived at the temple as only level 5. I've cleared the first floor, as well as some of the adjacent areas, and am now level 7). Given the kind of party I have that's fine by me, but I can see how this could very quickly frustrate anyone who isn't power-gaming. With crashes on top of that I don't blame you for calling it quits.

I've found a real trick for beating difficulty is using 5-foot steps. The AI just doesn't use them, so when you take 5-foot steps it can give you some extra AoO's and you can pretty much always restrict enemies to a single attack per round.
