the solution proposed in this German blog post from 2012 solved the same crash for me:

We are now happily running around Floatsam Island again.
Summary:
in folder "GOG Games/Tales of Monkey Island/Tales of Monkey Island 4/Pack/" rename or remove the file env_flotsamJungleNight.dlg

no idea what to do. the game files dont have the file ppl were deleting and i still crash. WHAT DO I DO????
