I've played and loved Monkey Island 1&2, and even 3, but each time I try to play Escape from Monkey Island, I'm really put off not only by the horrible controls but also by the writing and humor (specifically its unoriginality and all the blatant pop culture and breaking the 4th wall jokes that aren't even funny to me). So I wonder, is there some continuity between Escape from Monkey Island and Tales of Monkey Island that would justify playing through the former in order to enjoy the latter or are they completely independent of each other? Are there any events in MI4 that are referenced in ToMI? Thanks!

They're independent: since ToMI was made by a different company, it's more of a franchise reboot than a sequel. The events don't even occur directly after EMI, but rather after some off-screen adventures of Guybrush & Co., so you won't need EMI to understand the plot. There are, of course, references to previous Monkey Island games, but those are really more of in-jokes than anything truly important.

And there is nothing groundbreaking happening to characters in EMI that one should know?

Nothing that's directly relevant to what happens in ToMI, especially since the latter takes place in a completely different location and its plot is set up in the prologue. I believe Telltale even stated at some point that the game was specifically designed to not require past knowledge of the Monkey Island series.

Ok, thanks! I'll try and see if I like ToMI better than EMI then.
