If I buy the base game and a couple of expansions am I able to choose to play the base game only if I install them all at the same time?

If you're buying everything at once, I'd actually recommend that you play the Embers of Rage campaign first. It's shorter than the main one and a lot easier to get your bearings.

I'd probably buy all except the latest one for now (to save the pennies)
