Can anyone tell me what resolution SS2 was originally intended to be played in?

Often, my first impulse is to set the resolution to the highest possible or ideally my desktop's native resolution, of course, but I've found that with older games this doesn't always get me the best results in terms of authentic and consistent looks. In SS2 for example, it makes the GUI elements much smaller and less fitting with the overall design. So I wonder which resolutions the game was explicitly made for back in the days? 800*600? 1024*768?

I think it was optimized for 800x600 (DirectX 6).
It looks like this:

GOG's version is pre-patched for higher resolutions, but if the user interface is to small, you can try editing cam_ext.cfg

Remove the semicolon before "d3d_disp_scaled_2d_overlay 64".

Alternatively, scale the UI by removing the semicolon from ";d3d_disp_scaled_2d_overlay X Y"
Set x,Y to your resolution, e.g. d3d_disp_scaled_2d_overlay 1280 720
Make sure the former mentioned semicolon is in place ";d3d_disp_scaled_2d_overlay 64"
the UI elements were quite obviously designed for the 640*480 resolution (a standard accelerated resolution at that time). out of the box, the engine also supported 800*600 (performance), and 1024*768 (enthusiasts). 1600*1200 was available after cfg edit, but at that time, no pc would be able to run that with two digit FPS.

Thanks to both of you for the helpful answers! I set the GUI elements to scale and it works great with high resolutions. But maybe I'll play it in 640*480 anyway, I haven't decided yet. Call me crazy, but I think even this very low resolution feels perfectly fine for the game. :)
