I have a 64-bit Windows 10 system. For more than half the game, I play at frame rate that displayed as 50-60 but felt like 5-6. I tried every compatibility option I could find, running as admin, DX legacy runtimes, wrappers, etc. Nothing worked. Then I saw on a forum someone mentioned trying -32bit.
So I added -32bit to the GOG shortcut for Star Wolves, just added it right at the end. And bam! The game ran as smoothly as a 20-year old game should run on a modern machine. Interestingly, after it ran smooth once, I could remove the -32bit from the shortcut and the game stayed smooth, whether I launched using the shortcut or from Galaxy.
So, if you are experiencing choppy gameplay, especially on a 64-bit machine, try adding -32bit to the GOG shortcut.
When I realized I could finally play the game normally, enjoying a mix of Russian, German, and English voice acting, I was almost moved to tears.
