Seems to happen if you spend too much time in a mission. X-Wing training mission 5 is where it happens to me - the freighters take their sweet time to complete their tasks and I spend a lot of time taking down TIE fighters..

And it also happens when objectives are completed. Seems like the crash is connected to the fact, that the game changes music to the victory tune at that point.
