This is silly but I'm not sure how to end missions in XWA. I know I'm supposed to get close and then hit space. Except the prompt often doesn't show up, at all? Maybe I'm approaching the base from the wrong angle. I presumed you had to go toward the dock, but even performing a docking operation doesn't guarantee the prompt will show up, though it sometimes does.

I've cleared a few missions, but only thanks to good luck with the prompt. Or maybe I have bad luck?

Where am I supposed to be approaching it from? I presumed you had to go toward the dock, but even performing a docking operation doesn't guarantee the prompt will show up, though it sometimes does.

I've cleared a few missions, but only out of pure luck with the prompt showing up or not, since I don't understand what I'm doing with it. I miss the old game's instant hyper home already. :(
Once the mission and complete and you are docked at your space station you should have a "Go to Debriefing" option on your left MFD. Hitting Enter should trigger the mission to complete. If you don't have it, then it means that the objectives are not complete. Review your objective completion process on the right MFD

The missions are absolutely complete. Though it may be that the docking isn't complete, the ship sometimes seems to hover. But not always?

Though if you're saying to press Enter, not Space, maybe I got confused somewhere. I'll have to give it another shot.

Have a look at the video I posted. If you don't get the dialog that is seen there (at the linked time) although all objectives are accomplished then the docking procedure has not been completed.
Once all the objectives are complete, to finish the mission you must enter the hangar of your mother ship/base by approaching it and press Space when the green message appears over the aiming reticle. Sometimes you will need to move pretty close to see it appearing, sometimes it will show up being a bit mor farther. It can feel a bit random to be honest, but you just need to be near the hangar.

Pressing Space when the text shows up triggers an animation of your ship landing into the hangar using a random camera, either external or the cockpit one, and your only possible action is to navigate through the HUD menus (bottom-left and bottom-right), where it will appear two options: "Go to Debriefing" (that's it, exit the completed mission) and "Refly Mission" (restart it). If somehow you get an external camera and you don't see the hud, pres Enter without touching anything else to use the Debriefing option, or press the Left or Right keys to automatically move back to the cockpit and be able to mess with the HUD menus without risk of errors.

The same applies when you just want to go back to your mother ship to rearm warheads. Once landed, you will see that option in the HUD, as well a new one to go back to combat.

To mess with the "landing" HUD the landing animation doesn't need to complete. You can exit the mission, rearm warheads or go back to combat while it's still landing.

In most cases, you can just press Q, then Space to exit the mission instead of going to hangar once the mission is a success. Be careful, this cannot always be done. You'll get a warning sound then and a message that you'll be getting a penalty.
Okay, I'll try to put these tips into play in future attempts. So far so good! The way the game doesn't necessarily show the menu at the end is really weird.
