Hello! I'm interested in buying the X-Wing series, but I have a little doubt regarding the expansions:

First, do all the TIE Fighter and X-Wing Expansions come with the games?

And second, how can they be accessed and installed? Are they installed together or are they a separate launcher/installer/etc? Back in the day expansions were handled by CD, not by an auto Steam DLC, so =P

Thanks!

I don't have the games but according to the game cards -

STAR WARS™: TIE FIGHTER SPECIAL EDITION "Includes STAR WARS™: TIE Fighter and STAR WARS™: TIE Fighter - Defender of the Empire, both 1994 (DOS) and 1998 (Windows) versions, and STAR WARS™: TIE Fighter - Enemies of the Empire 1998 (Windows)."

STAR WARS™: X-WING SPECIAL EDITION "Includes STAR WARS™: X-Wing and all Tour of Duty expansions: Imperial Pursuit and B-Wing in both - 1993 (DOS) and 1998 (Windows) versions!"

Not sure about the second question, sorry.

The installers provided by GOG don't you choose if you want to install the expansions. The '98/Windows had the expansions included even back then. There isn't a real reason for not adding the expansions anyway since all they do is adding more battles for you to select - or is there anything I'm missing here?

Oh, by the way, Steam let's you add and remove DLC any time you want these days.
The expansions don't modify anything; they just extend the game in new missions, leaving existing missions unchanged.

Tie Defenders and Missile Boats are significant additions though. The game is long as hell with all expansions btw, I just finished Enemies of the Empire again in the GOG version and dude is the game long! Mostly because after tour 4 or 5 there's always something hard to protect from overwhelming assault or in the case of the expansions near impossible odds.

Have you played the series before or this will be the first time?

Things to be aware of:
- The best game in the series is considered Tie Fighter 95 DOS Collector Edition (which is missing from GOG). This one added higher res (640 x 480) among other things.
- X-wing 93 and Tie Fighter 94 DOS Versions haven't aged well. They are stuck at low res 320x240
- iMuse is the best thing not included in the Windows releases (Tie Fighter/X-wing 98)
- Enabling 3D Hardware Acceleration for the Windows version is a pain, especially for NVIDIA cards. GOG disabled the support in their exe file.
- Joystick is mandatory for Windows versions.
- Balance of Power campaign is inferior, since X-wing vs Tie Fighter was a multiplayer game.
- The best graphics you will find in X-Wing Alliance. Darksaber's Ultimate Craft Pack update is mandatory ;)

Hey there =) Nice list, thanks!

Yes, I''ve played them back when I was a child. A couple of years back I played Alliance with the DUCP pack and loved it, but had issues running it in Win 8. Now I'm looking forward to buy the whole collection so I can play them again, and wondered how the expansions fit in the whole thing.

About joysticks, I have a X52 -- and been playing Elite: Dangerous a lot lately =P

Yes. You get Tie Fighter and Defender of the Empire expansion. Also Enemies of the Empire. I can definitely confirm this because the original only had seven battles (campaigns) but here you get thirteen battles.

Same thing with X-wing. Content-wise you get the full experience. As for accessing, they are fully and seamlessly integrated into the main game. You don't even know where the original games end and expansions begin.

You can easily enable 3D acceleration by following this topic: http://www.gog.com/forum/star_wars_tie_fighter_special_edition/reintregrating_3dacceleration_kind_of

It works fine even on NVIDIA cards with an additional tweak in Nvidia Control Panel. It's all explained in the above topic.

Joystick is pretty much mandatory in 1998 version of the games. You can also use a gamepad. One user has also made a program that let's you play with keyboard and mouse combo. I don't know how that works really because I use a joystick. You should too if you have one. Gameplay is so much better that way.
