Hello.

From what I have read in the XvT forums, these re-released versions of X-Wing and TIE Fighter plays the MIDI music from the time the game was originally released -- and not the CD audio.

Is this correct?

The CD-ROM Editions use MIDI music.
The Windows ports with the XvT graphics use the same music as in XvT. :-)

Just to clarify a bit, since it gets confusing:

There are 3 versions of the games included in the GOG release. The original floppy disk DOS versions use MIDI audio. The CD-ROM Collector's Edition DOS releases also use the MIDI audio. The 1998 Windows re-releases, which use the X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter game engine instead of the original game engine, use CD audio.

Many players prefer the MIDI audio as it adapts on the fly based on what is happening in the battle, with little musical flourishes when ships arrive in the area or other things happen. The CD audio does not do this; it's just some music tracks that are playing on a loop.

Also, unconfirmed, but I've heard that when porting the games over to the X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter engine, there were some AI niggles where ships no longer know how to behave properly, and other small details that annoy fans of the original games. I've only ever played the originals, though, so I don't know for sure.
Thank you all for the feedback.

I own all versions of these games. I'm super lazy to figure out DOSBOX and kills me to pay for these games YET AGAIN!!! But, I love the MIDI music.

Now, only if they'd go on sale again...

Don't worry: When you buy X-Wing or TIE Fighter, you get all three versions of these games at once.
Also, DOSBox has already been configured for each game, so all you have to do is to simply launch them. :-)

Yet, for the MIDI versions worthwhile to setup a SoundFont to use with them.

Good point.
My personal soundfont recommendation is "Timbres of Heaven". :)

Hi Gydion, do you experience notes sticking when using General MIDI? I'm using it with VirtualMIDISynth and it sounds great but I get frequent hanging/sticking notes that I can only fix by reloading the game.

Thanks

What game and what soundfont? I don't have problems with my TIE Fighter Collectors' CD-ROM on Linux using fluidsynth with the Timbres of Heaven soundfont.
I have a similar issue with both X-Wing and TIE Fighter during flight. But in most cases, the issue disappears by itself after some time so I never bothered looking for a fix.

TIE Fighter Collector's CD-ROM, running on Windows 7 with VirtualMIDISynth and the Arachno SoundFont. Followed the tweak guide at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCNmuDaBNDY

I will give fluidsynth and Timbres of Heaven a go and see if it makes any difference. Many thanks.
