teleguy: The DirectX wrapper dgVoodoo now supports Tie Fighter 98 so if you still have issues in hardware or software mode give it a try.
http://dege.freeweb.hu/

The only problem is that XWA Hackers Fixedclear patch (included with the GoG version) is incompatible with dgVoodoo so you have to remove it first (credit goes to Darklord42 for finding this out). To do so download XWA Hacker http://sourceforge.net/projects/xwahacker/files/xwahacker-2.5.zip/download , copy xwahacker.exe and tie95nofixedclear.bat to the game directory and run tie95nofixedclear.bat.
I can finally use the power of my Geforce Card instead of my Integrated intel Card when playing Xwing VS Tie fighter in Hardware mode. Without dgVoodooSetup, the text and cockpits would flicker and make the game unplayable. However, the scanline effect is really strong. Would it be possible to remove the scanline mode completely, or make a tick box to turn it off ?
This WAS working for me till today when I had a driver crash and had to uninstall ALL my graphics drivers and then reinstall them (no updates to the drivers since it worked). dgVoodoo's wrap works fine and I get no crashes, but now with TIE Fighter Special Edition 1998, when I go into the combat, I have a purple overlay on the screen and the options menu. Going back to non-3D fixes this issue, so I know it's something to do with DirectX, but I can't figure out what's wrong. I do NOT have this same issue in 3D acceleration mode in X-Wing Special Edition, btw. mudlord's patch did nothing.

The only difference between no problems and problems is that I had either my Display Port on the dock or monitor go bad or the display port cable went bad, so I'm now using digital to HDMI on my laptop's dock for the monitor which displays the game. That's it. It COULD be the difference between display port and HDMI, but that just seems really whacky and odd. The issue ONLY occurs during the combat sequence, not out of combat.

I'm now annoyed because the jagged edges on the starfighters is bugging the crap out of me in 640x480 16bit mode. Looked much better in 3D acceleration mode, but it's really ugly and bad looking with that purple overlay.

Any ideas?

Edit: Interesting development. I realized that ANY mission started whatever the graphics settings if I'm using Voodoo's wrapper will start with the purple overlay, but if I quit and restart, it goes away. After it goes away, it stays away (ie. working properly) in 3D or any other graphics setting. This has to be a voodoo thing, but I'm not sure what's causing it. My monitors are connected to my laptop's dock using DVI to HDMI (DVI on the dock side, as the dock has a DVI or display port option for each monitor) cables. Ordered display port cables and we'll see if changing it from DVI to display port was the issue (it'll be a bizarre thing if it does, but it could be due to how the graphics drivers handle the wrapper and outputting to dvi... that's the only semi-coherent conclusion I can reach).

I'd be happy if people want to try out my D3D11 wrapper fork:

It's the one that was mentioned before that in the original version crashed due to palette handling not working.
One thing I don't remember though is whether I managed to fix the mouse cursor.
You might need to enable software mouse emulation in the launcher to get a cursor.

Works for the Steam versions of X-Wing, Tie Fighter and XvT.
