So, I booted up Tie Fighter 98 for the first time in a while, then went straight for the first training mission to have a nice relaxing time shooting boxes and Z-95s.

And instead of (or possibly over) the usual music, this song starts playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zY0uDSrb1dw

As soon as I exited out of the mission, the music stopped. I do not own this song on any platform, nor was Spotify playing it in the background (I checked). I have never had this problem before. I found another post on this topic (https://www.gog.com/forum/star_wars_tie_fighter_special_edition/odd_modern_music_ingame), but the OP just said that they found a solution elsewhere on this forum and fixed the problem. I see threads from people talking about having no music or restoring the music from earlier editions, but nothing else on the Attack of the Weird Alt-Rock from Nowhere, so if someone could point me to the relevant posts I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

Tie 98 used cd tracks and the GOG version uses ogg files instead IIRC, probably something went wrong and it took music from another folder instead.
I was wondering if it was something like that! (I'm still not sure where they're finding this song on my hard drive, given that I've never even come in contact with it before, much less ripped/bought it.)

Any suggestions on a fix? I've already tried verifying the files, then doing a clean install on a separate drive.

It might rely on the windows registry which means a clean install might not be possible unless you know which registry keys to modify or delete.
I suggest you ask on the XWAupgrade forum, those are people that mess with these games quite regularly and they might be able to help.

This registry sections might help... try changing the CDPath (which should be ignored anyway, for instance "D:" was set as default by the installer, but on my PC is actually a secondary HDD partition... since it contains neither GOG games or Galaxy client or music files stored, causes no issues) to something else, like the same drive where the game is

I know this is months later, but I just had the same thing happen after installing Tie Fighter 1998 and entering the combat simulator. It started playing the Outkast cd which I had in my d drive, which corresponds to what a couple of you mentioned here, and sure enough it was in the cd path in the registry. I just removed the cd, and that was it. I haven't tinkered with the path in registry so that it doesn't do that again. I'm just curious if psychocygnet ever found out where the mystery jams were coming from and if they were able to correct the issue?
