I'm currently trying to relive the glory days of Tie Fighter, but am forced to do so on my Mac. The game runs absolutely fine via what I presume is DOSBox, but I can't get it to recognize my joystick/controller. I'm using a PS4 dualshock, and other games see it just fine (Rebel Galaxy, for example). But for some reason I can't get it to work in TIE fighter. I've opened the DOSBox preferences and set the joystick type to "auto" and also tried "fcs", but nothing seems to work.

It's as if the game doesn't see anything, because when I start it up and it says to press a joystick button, nothing happens. Does anyone have any advice on how best to fix this? Thanks in advance!

You could try running it in the full version of Boxer to see if there is any difference. He ripped out the SDL layer from Boxer/Boxer Standalone and is AFAIK using some native code. I've heard there are issues with some joysticks/controllers, possibly more so on newer versions of OS X, from this. I don't actually game on Macs though.
Worst case you can try running it in stock DOSBox. Oh, get a joystick for this game. It's worth it.

Wow! Boxer did the trick, and was super simple to get going! I was completely unaware of this software, and it's so much more slick than standard DOSBox (though a little less granular). It recognized by controller and everything works pretty great. Thanks so much!

Also, very much agreed on the joystick. I plan to get TIE Fighter working with my Warthog HOTAS as soon as I can, but for the time being I'm relegated to the DualShock option. Still, you're quite correct!
