Bornslip: I decided to go for the '94 version (Far superior due to iMuse imho), but the throttle on my Logitech Extreme3D Pro joystick doesn't seem to work, and there's no way to set up the joystick like in the Windows version.

Does anyone know how to get the throttle to work in the DOS version, like it does in the Windows version?
The key for this, I think, is to download an old version of Logitech's Gaming software and assign custom zones to your throttle - the most recent version of the software didn't do a bit of good.

You can find the older version of the software here: http://support.logitech.com/en_us/product/291#download

Select windows 8 32-bit and get version 5.10.127. It works on my 64-bit install of Windows 8.1. I've got 4 zones mapped to my throttle now: 0%, 33%, 66% & 100%

Tarvis: There's an old TSR that did just that!

Download it here (http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?t=28807#p230212), extract JOY.COM to the game directory.

To actually have the game use it though, you're going to have to edit the DOSBOX config file in a text editor. Don't worry, you only need to add one line.

Open up dosbox_tie_single.conf in a text editor. Just before the line "tie.exe", add a new line and type "joy.com", save and close it.

Now when you play it will ask you to calibrate the throttle dial before launching the game. That's how you know it loads the TSR properly. If you did all that and it doesn't work ingame, you might need to swap Axes 3 and 4 in another DOSBOX config. Open dosbox_tie.conf, find the line in the [joystick] section and change the line swap34=false to swap34=true. You might not need to do that step depending on your joystick, but I needed to for my Logitech.

It only increments the throttle in thirds just like the [ ] \ keys, but then again that's all the Windows version does. Unfortunately there's nothing similar to enable rudder control, though the Windows version doesn't support that either
Trying to use this with the new '95 CD-ROM version. I put the joy.com file in the Tie Fighter CD folder, and edited dosbox_tiecd_single.conf. But when I launch the game it asks me to calibrate my joystick, but after that there is a black screen with a blinking cursor and the game never starts.
Any help would be appreciated :)

EDIT: Got it to load the game by changing the output to opengl, however dosbox is now extremely slow and it seems like the game is running at about half speed. Settings are core=auto, cycles=max. The game works fine if I disable the JOY.COM. Any idea why this would slow it down?

What about just using the gog version without this joy.com file? Try a fresh install, start the game and calibrate the joystick. Hope it helps.

If it does not, please check some ideas that worked for other users right here:

Got the same problem, but switching to opengl still won't load the game :(

Tarvis: Is joy.com in your TIECD folder? If you remove the tie and exit line, does it say anything about it not loading?
avatar
GLRob: Thanks, It was in the dosbox folder. I moved it to the TIECD folder, and I get the prompts now before it loads the game. However, now the game stutters and is unplayable. Any advice for this new issue?
Mine did the same thing. Change the dosbox_tiecd.conf joystick to FCS. That stopped the game stuttering. Throttle works great now. Search for: joysticktype= in the file to find it. (Is it just my conf files that are all out of format for GOG games?)

joysticktype=fcs
timed=false
autofire=false
swap34=true
buttonwrap=false

Try opening them with Wordpad instead of Notepad. But I think mine were formatted better even in Notepad, so that's odd.

Thank you! That looks a lot better (I can actually make sense of it now without the search function!) What's weird is that it's only the GOG Conf files that do this. Any other NON-GOG DosBox game/conf file I open with notepad is still formatted correctly, which is why I never thought to use something other than notepad...

They're generated/saved with *nix line endings. Vanilla Notepad, as you found out, chokes on them.

There is an easy explanation for this. Using the GOG "graphics configuration utility" will "garble up" the config file. Notice how, after a fresh install, the config file is fine. But once you use the "graphics configuration utility", it's all messed up.

Solution: Always edit it by hand and don't use that utility :)

Hello,I had the same problem with throttle not working. I tried to follow the above instructions: I downloaded the TSR then extracted it to where my game files were: At least I think I did: after I extracted it then it was listed with other star wars tie fighter cd files it's right now right between INSTALOW and Launch Settings goggame-galaxyFilelist and 80 or so others. Then I looked for a folder called dosbox_tie_single.conf and I found none. I don't know. Also, when I later tried to open TSR it said my windows prevented it being open cause unknown not safe or whatever, I don't know if that has anything to do with anything. By the way since I didn't find the exact file called dosbox_tie_single.conf I saw one that I mistakenly thought was that one cuz it is almost a similar file name: dosbox_tiecd_single I thought it was the same one as you mentioned so I edited it accordingly to what you said above oops?.

Anyway I started the game , nothing asked me to calibrate anything it just started up like it did normally :No mention of calibration.

Ya so anyway I figured the best thing to do would be to set my plus throttle to full throttle: backspace and I set the negative throttle on joystick to 1/3 throttle which is [. I think that will work. Then I left a 70 percent space in the middle so after I change it either way it won't beep continuously.
This version of xwjoy has continuous throttle (3% increments, instead of 33) and persistent calibration:

Using win 10 64 bit

I was unable to get joy.com working, nor xwjoy.com

With joy.com, I would get the two throttle calibration messages, then just a blinking cursor. Game never starts.
With xwjoy.com, I just get a blinking cursor and game doesn't start.

Tried opengl and all the other renderers besides default, none of those options worked either.

I am wondering if all the previous posters who reported this as working were on win 7 x64

I am using a logitech extreme 3d pro on a thinkpad t14 gen 2 amd
