Both of my joysticks work fine in Windows, however when I start the game and it asks me to center my joystick and press a button, none of the buttons work on either joystick.

One is a Microsoft Sidewinder Pro, the other is a Gravis Thunderbird.

Any suggestions?

Sorry, no. It didn't even ask me to center my joystick when I first started the game. I didn't even need to calibrate it in Windows. Just plug and play. Have you tried manually mapping joystick buttons within the game? Just hit esc when you enter the game and then click on joystick. Is it only buttons that aren't working. Does the game register when you move the stick?

i think joystick calibration is only needed in the DOS-version from 1994

open the dosbox conf-file and fiddle around with the joystick-settings
For the Dos version try the following, open the Dosbox .conf file with notepad and find and edit the following lines.

[joystick]
joysticktype=2axis
timed=false
autofire=false
swap34=false
buttonwrap=false

Save and exit.

Also make sure the joystick is the "prefered device" in the Windows gamecontrollerpanel, or just unplug every unneeded gamecontroller.
