How do you enable 3d acceleration?

I know there's the 8-bit -16 bit and 3d acceleration options, but choosing the 3d accelerated option doesn't actually enable it like it used to in the non-GOG version. No texture filtering etc.

Was it removed due to compatibility issues?

Hi,

You probably have to look very closely. By the way the hardware 3D stuff in X-Wing vs. Tie also was not that impressive. Try the two 640x480 options and then compare them with the display under hardware 3D. You may find it is already working while looking less impressive than it could.

Cheers

3d acceleration simply doesnt seem to work anymore for those games, even with the famous 3d-compatibility patch, its some graphicsdriver-related issue

there's a thread @vogons about this issue and believe me, you'll see the difference

@patricklibuda: I know the game isn't a looker, but there IS a big difference between software and hardware rendering. The grainy mess you get with software rendering looks very different from the 3d accellerated smudged look :P

@Cyphox: What a solution was found there :P

Run dosbox,
install windows 95 in dosbox
Run Tie fighter with the 3d acceleration patch in windows 95 in dosbox and it works.

It indeed seems to be a driver problem.... I'll try to run it on my windows xp machine (with an ati x1600m), 3d acceleration worked in the past on that one.
3D indeed doesn't seem to work anymore.
A few years ago, I remember I got it working by using the compatibility fix mentioned by Cyphox:

True, memory does cloud your judgement sometimes ;-). Have tried out X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter in the meantime and that also only works properly in software mode.

GoG specifically disabled the 3D hardware option. Probably because they couldn't get it working on Windows 8.

There's a patch to re-enable it, but it still might not work without all those other fun compatibility fixes.

Well, that actually enabled 3d acceleration! Except now it crashes less than 1 second after it loads a mission.
I'm beginning to see why they disabled it :S
Software still runs fine.

Unfortunately, Tie Fighter, like X-Wing Alliance, really doesn't like new graphics cards. While there is a fix for AMD/ATI, NVIDIA is still unsolved. Game seems to have issues running with 3d acceleration on your monitor's non-native resolution. This is easily resolved on XWA, because you can modify the game resolution with xwahacker. Once you set it to your native resolution, it works fine. Tie Fighter is a bit harder. You can change the resolution in hex editor but for most people the game then becomes unplayable or crashing.

This is a topic where you can find more info on this problem: http://www.gog.com/forum/star_wars_tie_fighter_special_edition/reintregrating_3dacceleration_kind_of
