I thought this game looked cool last year and picked it up, then I took a look at the rulebook, over 100 pages! Game looks neat, but Ive had a hard time getting the motivation to read the rulebook (I already tried playing without it and was lost).

1. What matters to build stuff is refined minerals, you get some per every refinery/mine pair that you have each n turns
2. Empire is good at stopping and starting uprisings thanks to the emperor's bonus to leadership, but that works only when he's on Coruscant.
3. Rebellion is good at diplomacy thanks to slightly more diplos and at sabotage thanks to Han's speed bonus in missions, but only when he's accompanied exclusively by characters, not unnamed staff
4. Admirals help fleets, commanders help fighters in fleets, generals help invasion armies and defending armies

All the rest you can work out by trial and error.

IIRC the rulebook has a step-by-step tutorial to help you figure out the basics.
Here there is a nice guide which you can read it in one hour or so: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=835643286
