It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).

Qaeylen: I had the same issue as most, the game would launch in the background and I could hear audio but nothing would appear. I would get the "No Direct 3D Device" error, along with "Fatal Exception" errors as well. After working with support most of the day, updating drivers and trying varying degrees of compatibility mode, I found one thing through Reddit that actually worked for me.

In the install folder of the game, there should be a file called dbghelp.dll.

All I had to do was rename it to dbghelp_old.dll and it frickin worked! I was able to load up the game, full screen, no problem at all. I didn't have to mess with any other DirectX versions, this was on a clean install direct from GOG, no additional patches and it wasn't run or installed in compatibility mode.

I haven't tried playing anything yet, but I can see the menu, and the UI and so.. fingers crossed.
This worked for me too - the only issue I have now is that the ship models are oddly distorted when in the actual game. They are too wide. The issue seems to resolve itself if you hide the UI with the "D" key though... It's weird

I've seen another post about that in here as well. Something about the game not being really optimized for widescreens. I don't, or haven't come across yet, any fixes as I'm still playing around with the game as it is, getting back into the groove of things. There might be a mod that could be installed to help that but I'm not sure yet. I just got my copy to start working, didn't want to break it right away trying to mod it. Lol. At least yet. For sure, I hope the better textures mod works. lol

*Edit*

I found the "fix" on a Reddit page for the game "Rise of Nations". Different game but it dealt with the exact same issue, almost verbatim, that I was having. Credit goes to the user "Helios210", who posted how to rename that file.
WTF... xD

Now it runs! Big THX! :)

Xenon_Slayer: Unfortunately, I can't seem to solve it. I start the game and hear the cutscenes but I don't see anything. And after the last cutscene, it crashes with the following:

---------------------------
D3D8 Application
---------------------------
Could not find any compatible Direct3D
devices.

I have a multi-monitor setup, so maybe that's an issue. I can't see any option to change which device to output to. Also strange is that my "Display mode" option in the DirectX wrapper only gives me "Same as desktop" or "Set by application" but I've seen screenshots where people select a resolution.

I've installed DirectX9 and verified the installation again but no luck.
Are you running on an AMD GPU?
re the dbghelp.dll errors. there is a working version of this file in (i believe) in
C:\Windows\SysWOW64

I have copied the one here to the game directory and the game boots. still have the off centre ship issue mind.
I had a different error, well same type different cause. was access violation error in Tald3DengineR.dll managed to fix it by deleting the D3D8.dll file. though this probably only a issue on Win 7 rigs.
Mine is a model render exception error. Happened right after I bought a Vorcha cruiser on the Klingon campaign...

This fix also worked for me.
An AMD hotfix has been released so (especially) if you are a Radeon user this should help with your launching issues. If the issue still persists with the hotfix, please get in touch with us as it might be a problem with your software/hardware setup and the game which we can look into.

The hotfix has also resolved the camera offset issue.

Happy gaming guys and sorry about these initial difficulties and hope we can all just enjoy some Star Trek now

Can you implement a much-needed and VERY simple hotfix for SFC1 that was figured out years ago, while you're at it? :D
