Spellforce 1 is not a very simple game and you need a lot of knowledge how to build an avatar or to play a mage so i decided to give some help.
1.) If you start the game the first time i really recommend to play a fighter. Just max out heavy fighting abliities and also max out strength. The mage is way better for the gameplay but you must know a lot about this game already to play it good.
2.) How to find magic spells: It is important to know how to find the magic scrolls. You need to save before you check a body/chest for the loot if you play a mage. The chances to find a good scroll is dependent how you spent your points. If you have Elemental Magic and Fire 5, Ice 4 for example and you loot a level 5 scroll then the chances are high you loot a fire spell. You can even go so far to leave all loot until you finish the map and then get workers to each body/chest and check them for magic. How you find the magic in spellforce is wrong game design choice in my opinion they should have appeared fully automatically in the spellbook.
3.) Get used to not run around before you activate the monument so that you really get the gameplay how it is meant to be played. The original campaign is not that difficult once you know the game. Breath of winter is more difficult and Shadow of the Phoenix is in between of the two.
4.) Do not kill immediatly the bases where the opponent spawns since you can get more way more experience. You can build towers around the bases and just wait a bit so that you get more experience.
5.) The builds of the avatar in this game is almost unlimited but you really need to concentrate on a few and max them out.
That should be some good starter guide
