I've been looking for a game like FTL for a while now and this seems like it with deeper RPG mechanics (even better!)

Am I right in my assumption?

I don't think, that you should take FTL as a reference for this game. Both games have completely different mechanics and if you like one of them, doesn't necessarily mean you'll like the other one! So yeah, "skylessnight" is right, try the demo first!

FTL plays more like a traditional RPG (combined with strong Rogue-like elements) where you can manage your crew in their development, but has a mostly linear plot. Smugglers V lacks the crew development (as you only manage the captain's development) but has a more sandbox RPG style. So yeah, they may be of the same genre, but it's like comparing Final Fantasy to Elder Scrolls.
