Hi,

The problem can be caused by some other program or sound driver installing its own default playback device.

Please try and go into the Windows Control Panel. Open up "Sounds and Audio Devices." or similiar there. Then click on the audio tab. The default playback device should be set to your soundcard.

For Win 7 > look here:

Thanks for the quick reply.
I have checked that and it is set properly.
I have also re-installed my sound drivers and DirectX.
Only program that does this so far, gonna try it on my other identical XP laptop and see what happens.
Are you using Winamp?

No.
Other than about 15 games, libreoffice, 7-zip and 2 photo editors this machine is pretty clean.

If you are willing to experiment a bit, please try to play one of the .wav files and one of the .ogg files manually in the game directory with your default multimedia player (which player is that by the way?).

Default player is Media Player Classic-Home Cinema which I've used on every machine for many years without issue.
It plays the files in the game dir fine.

My other laptop which is identical to this one works fine.
Just need to find out what is borked in this one.
I'm uninstalling the game, rebooting and reinstalling now.
Success! Apparently I was lucky enough to just have a bad install.
I'm marking your post as the solution as a Thank You for your hep. :)
