Dear fellow GOGers,

I have recently bought this game, and am having fun as a trader (Independent). However, I'm a bit stuck on how to buy a company. If I click on the "Buy a Company" option, it says "You need to have the ability 'Factory Owner' in order to found a company". If I go to the "View Personal Skills" screen, I can see "Factory Owner" skill, which is greyed-out, but I can't work out how to "buy" any of the skills - the "Choose Skill" option is greyed-out for all skills, even the ones it claims I already have. I'm fairly sure I have been "promoted" a few times (I have 1.4m credits). Any ideas on what to do?

Thanks in advance!
Hi,

I am the developer of the game.

For each new rank promotion (not just ribbons, but a new fleet rank) you can choose a new skill. You can only select those skills that are adjacent to already owned skills in the skill tree. You have to work yourself to the top of the skills. When you go straight for factory owner you need to have at least the rank of commander (Federation or aquivalent rank with other factions).

I hope this helped.
Thanks for getting in touch.

I'm probably being really stupid, but here's my Personal Status Screen, the Skills Screen and what is then shown if I click on the "Personal Connections" skill, which I think should be available in the Skills tree. However, the "Choose Skill" option doesn't let me "buy" that skill with my experience points. Any tips?

As an aside, how do I see how many experience points I have free to spend?

Edit - Ah, after playing a bit further, I progressed to the next Rank, and was given the option to use my new Experience Point to select an ability, and that DID let me choose an ability, as you suggested. In previous turns where I had gained Rank, I just clicked on Cancel, and I think that meant I lost the ability to use my newly-acquired Experience Point.

Basically the idea is that you don't earn a new ability with every "level up", only when you reach a new rank (i.e. you might have to fill your xp bar 3 or 4 times before progressing to a new rank and gain a new ability). In other words, hitting cancel won't deny you any ability. If you did earn a new ability point and hit cancel, it will remain available in your character screen until you decide to use it to unlock a new ability.

Ah, I see - I falsely thought that each time you "Level Up", you can choose a new Skill or Ability. Thanks for explaining.

That was my initial impression as well when I was obsessively clicking on the skill screen button hoping to finally get a new one. Took me a while before I realized it only happened when I gained an actual fleet rank.
All things considered, I think you should be able to buy a skill rest myself. There's not always a good way to test skills before you get them, and because of that you can end up getting a bad one, but then have no way to get rid of it. That, or you should be able to 'buy' a skill point somewhere in the world. Like say, for ten million or some other high amount, explained in game as you literally getting a mind expansion.
I think there is a story event or two where you get a skill point.

A skill reset is a good idea. I am wondering whether to add it in the game or add it as a cheat.

This is off topic but I just wanted to say I love the game. I really hope to see more!
