When I looked on ProtondB, I saw that Steam users were unable to get it to work (so far) due to trouble with PhysX. GOG installers usually take care of that problem, so I decided to give it a try. The installer installs the correct version of PhysX at the end of the process. It worked for me with no tinkering or problems, and there is no need to install PhysX using Winetricks. I'm using Wine 5.7-8 and the Lutris launcher. I also briefly tried the current version of Proton, and it seems to work just as well. I suspect that any recent version of Wine or Proton will work. There are no special configurations required. DXVK is enabled by default; it may or may not make a difference with this game. The game is a bit slow to launch on the first try, but this might just be how it is and it might be sluggish on Windows too - I don't know for certain. Performance is just fine once it starts up, and subsequent launches are faster. Upon first launch, it is necessary to configure the graphics to get the correct resolution and quality settings - it defaults to a mode that isn't likely to be anyone's first choice. From the main menu, click Options, and then Graphics options, and click the check box when it asks to quit and launch the configuration tool. I played through the tutorial and a little beyond that point; performance was great, and there were no crashes or weird problems.
Of course, someone else's experience may vary, but it looks encouraging from my standpoint. I hope the Steam users find a solution so that they can enjoy it too. I suspect that they need to manually install the correct version of PhysX - someone will probably figure it out eventually.
