DRM: Unfortunately, no. I installed "DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)", which the Microsoft website claimed included all of the DirectX 9.0 files, disabled Bitdefender's real-time protection, disabled .NET Framework 4.7, and then checked the box to enable Direct Play, and still am getting stuck on "searching for required files." I've been consoling myself with sessions of Sid Meier's Colonization (the original DOS version, not the Civ 4 spin-off). I know there's a "Planetfall" mod for Civ 4 which would give me at least some of the flavor of SMAC, but it wouldn't be quite the same as playing SMAC itself. (Back when I still had a Windows 7 computer, I played and enjoyed both SMAC and the Civ 4 "Planetfall" mod.) I suppose I should also do some more online research to see if there is anything else I should try to get SMAC/Alien Crossfire running on a Windows 10 computer, but I might take a break to do something else for a bit first, so I can troubleshoot some more when I'm refreshed.

Goodaltgamer: sad to here :(

With this it shall normally work.......even on this funny Win10 version ;)

(good old colonization :D )

I am just wondering if MS did change something for the directplay behaviour.....which version of WIn10 are you running? (might be worthwhile) looking into this area....maybe.....
It's Windows 10 Home, version 1709.
It may be failing hardware that's the problem; my desktop computer is now getting stuck in "getting Windows ready; don't turn off your computer " - even when I can trigger Automatic Repair mode, pressing the key to restart in "Safe mode with networking" just gets it back into the same "getting Windows ready" loop. I left it alone all morning while I was at work and now have a useable desktop for the moment, so I'm copying all important data files to a portable hard drive. My husband OKed buying a replacement computer, so we have one on order from the Best Buy website, and it should arrive here in a couple of days. In the meantime, I'm using my laptop and my husband's computer to access the Internet and play games.
