Are the controls in this game similar to your usual FPS game (WSAD+mouse) or are they something different?

Basically you have two 'pieces' to controll, your cockpit and your torso.
You can control the cockpit (i.e. viewing and shooting direction) with either the wsad keys or the mouse. The torso is steered by the arrow keys. You can configure most keys, but not all which are steering related.
So yeah, the controlls are similar to an fps game, in the sense that you can use the arrow keys and the mouse, but different in the sense that you control head and body seperately (ie. if you want to strafe, you look to the right and move forward). When you are used to fps controls however, the transition is easy. Just run around in the first mission for a couple of minutes and you'll get it.

What I would really like to do is control the cockpit/upper body position with the mouse and use the WSAD keys for movement (as close to a FPS as possible). I've played other mech games before, like Mechwarrior, and I never liked the way it controlled. In hectic firefights I would often lose track of which way the mech's legs were facing in relation to the cockpit and I would end up doing something stupid like running sideways into a wall instead of going forward like I intended. If this game allows modification of the controls to allow me to adjust for that, I may have to give it a try (at 6 bucks, I might try it even if it doesn't).
I just checked ingame, and it should work like you want it to.
You can both remap the directional controlls for the head and the torso.
..and I know exactly what you mean with crashing into everything while trying to hit something ;-)
But the payoff when you finally get it is rather nice. Something newer games simply don't have. Old games still make you work for your kills, the little rascals ;-)
