There's a 2001 movie with the same name and a similar premise revolving around and the fictional anti-psychotic drug B-390. Having played the game and watched the movie there are definitely indications either one inspired the other or both were inspired from something else.
In the movie we basically follow Max Warick who is conducting the trials for B-390 a drug that has beneficial effects in curing people of madness, but with the effect of driving those in the control group mad. Like in the game there is corporate exec type character who while aware of what's going on even before Max, is more interested in the potential for profit in shoving the drug out there with Max ending up in the insanity ward.
