Here's how I do it. I'm currently juggling four different characters.
1) Turn autosaves off in options. They're just going to hopelessly confuse your save file organization.
2) Your current game is always going to be on top, under your quicksave. That can't be helped.
3) I keep *two* backups of every character every time I switch from one to the other.
4) Each time I end a play session, I update both backups plus my main character file to the same, current save state.
Here's a sample of my current save file names:
a) Quicksave
b) Skywalker (sword gladiator, current game)
c) Seraphim
d) Thor (hammer and axe gladiator)
e) Skywalker Backup
f) Skywalker Backup 2
g) Battle Mage Backup
h) Battle Mage Backup 2
i) Seraphim Backup
j) Seraphim Backup 2
k)Thor Backup
l) Thor Backup 2
They're not quite in that neat an order in my save list. They always go in there according to date that you saved them. Your most recent one will always be on top. If there's a way to change the sort order, I don't know about it. But my system works for me - I haven't accidentally erased any of my characters I care about, which I know I'd be highly likely to do by clicking in the wrong place if I weren't keeping backups.
