I just tested Rune Classic and Rune Gold during several hours and I can tell you that you will obtain the best gaming experience with...Rune Gold.
The Rune Classic version is less stable.

For a better gaming experience, I advice you to add this changes to Rune Gold:

- d3d9 renderer: https://playrune.com/guides/updated-renderers
- update multiplayer server list: https://playrune.com/guides/server-list-fix
- change language: https://www.gog.com/forum/rune_classic/what_languages_included_in_rune_gold

and for Linux users, I wrote a Lutris script that will automagically install and configure the game, just click on "install" button and it is ready to play:
