Well, at the time of this post, it's defintely worth buying here from GoG, as it's $1 cheaper than buying it direct from Ludeon (34 vs 35). (edit - okay, now it's listed as 34.99. So, you're only saving a penny)

As for game experience? Everybody has their own preferences. I was originally drawn to the prison architect style. Watching a let's play by MATN on youtube sealed the deal for me. I'd definitely recommend heading over to youtube and reddit to check out people's experiences.

30 bucks for a game that is basically unplayably difficult ( or at the least very very frustrating )
without mods that allow you to select your colonists, planet and map is just too darn expensive.
( and it never was on sale )

Plus, Mods for Rimworld are workshop based. You can get them from the RW forum too,
but that's very chaotic as you do not have any sorting ability there and of course no automatic updates.

And as mentioned before, RW without mods...

It brings tears to my eyes to say this, but... The way RW is, it is one of the very VERY few games that is
better bought on steam.

Erm, what? The base game allows your to reroll colonists, the planet, and your starting location right in the game setup screen.

As for unplayably difficult, Rimworld is a survival sim. A survival sim that you win on your first attempt would be rather boring? So yes, Rimworld will challenge you, but calling it unplayably difficult hardly seems fair. I remember my first game to last for hours until I succumbed to a raiding party, and now that I understand the mechanics better, I can play for several days real time without losing a single colonist (on "rough" difficulty - and the game offers 3 difficulty levels below that).

I have been playing it for a while, some time ago and i have to say it's not worth full price. Half price - maybe.

It's definitely overpriced.
for mod discussion look here:
https://www.gog.com/forum/rimworld/game_uses_steam_workshop_for_mods

In any case this game is strongly inspired from The Dwarf Fortress or perhaps more like simplified from it.
Take a look at some Random youCrap lets-play videos it looks fun enough. But always modded some way.

or watch a guide for beginners like this one

I concur, 'SarahGabriella'.
I own both versions & transferring mods from Steam to GOG is super easy.
To suggest RimWorld needs mods to be enjoyed is...silly.
I play with very few mods, mainly 'EdBPrepareCarefully', Numbers, & 1 or 2 Biomes ones.
Hell I even did a couple for myself.
It is comical to listen to folks complain about the 100's of mods they use not being updated at their whim.
I have a friend that will use mods for games that don't really need them, just because they are a mod. :)

I got the vegetable garden mod without Steam too. Its on the Ludeon website as are the best most up to date mods.
Tynan have now enabled download of mod's via use of anonymous login to SteamCMD :-)
So the steam-only mods are no issue any more. Because RimWorld mods can now be downloaded by anyone from steams workshop.

See here for description of this.

Yes, you must buy this game. I am playing it from the beginning. I can say that it's definetely one of the best games ever if you're into management stuff. Buy it and enjoy!
If you are looking for a game you can start and play thru to the end on your first try . . . you should probably pass on RimWorld. You will be frustrated, possibly angry on your first attempt, second and third try as well. RimWorld is not for everybody.

Having maxed out hundreds of Banished games since release I had been looking for a similar game for some time. I found the price to be fair. If you enjoy this type of game it's great.

Like Banished, there is a learning curve that some will find tiresome. RimWorld seems to be more intricate than Banished but similar enough that it's not intimidating. I like the interface better and find it easy to use. It runs great on Linux.

Another positive I've found is RimWorld does not overwhelm my laptop's i5 CPU. Banished graphics are beautiful but keeps my cooling fan running full blast almost continuously. RimWorld graphics are much simpler but offer similar game play without the CPU heating.

I can't name any negatives as it's exactly what I expected. I have about 10 hrs of game play since purchased last week so I might find some as I get further along. First game I've bought in a while that I find myself looking for more time to play.

If you like Banished or similar games than I recommend RimWorld.

Edit: BTW, I've not tried any mods as vanilla seems very playable.
