or is there a place to get them. Seems crazy to come to GOG w/out mod supprt on this game where mods are huge I hear.

Tynan have now enabled download of mod's via use of anonymous login to SteamCMD :-)
So the steam-only mods are no issue any more. Because RimWorld mods can now be downloaded by anyone from steams workshop.
