While playing the first Resident Evil, I noticed there were default bindings for a Microsoft SideWinder Game Pad (likely part of the original 1996 release) and, seeing as I had one, I wanted to try it out.

Unfortunately it doesn't work, at least not fully. The buttons and triggers function as you would expect, but on the d-pad only left and up register in-game. I have confirmed through Windows settings that my controller is not malfunctioning.

I think the issue is that the game was originally designed to work with the earlier version of the SideWinder Game Pad that uses a Game Port connector, but mine is the updated model that plugs in through USB.

Any chances of a compatibility patch, or is this controller too far off the beaten path? Either way, thank you for updating this game to work on modern systems. I played through the entire campaign as both Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine with a DualShock 4 controller (it just worked), and I experienced no crashes or instability. Marvelous work.

It's because of the GOG Input Wrapper. Rename the file and try it out. I use a Microsoft Sidewinder Game Pad Pro to play this game. USB version. You can do it for Resident Evil 2, as well.

dinput.dll ➔ dinput.dll.bak

Renaming the .dll worked, thank you! The one I'm using is a SideWinder Game Pad USB, model X08-09336.
