I asked this once before some time ago and drew blanks but another attempt may be in order. What brings this up again is: in the "Gothic" section (this is an issue for many old games) someone gave instructions for a work around but with Nvidia cards (I have an ATI Radeon H3600 series card) involving setting game and computer to a lower resolution then telling the graphics card not to scale to size. I cannot find that option on my ATI card. ATI tech support has been less then helpful. Second, my own work around is no longer possible as my old Sony Triniton monitor (circa 1999) died so I am stuck with a modern wide screen.

Anyone know how to scale an ATI card?

Is this an issue that GOG.com support is likely to help me with (since it affects so many old games)?

Do they still make 5:4 monitors? Any sites that sell used ones?

Do you mean 4:3 (resolutions 640:480 to 1024:768) monitors? You can still buy those, but you can also set your screen resolution to 4:3 mode. You'll get black lines on either side of the screen and your widescreen monitor won't be at it's crispest native resolution, but everything on the screen should be in the correct proportions.

Yes, the black bars. I tried the CCC (ver 8.7 I believe) but with your further details, will try again. I'm notorious for missing things others might find obvious. 4:3 is what I meant, too. Thanks.

EDIT: Well, couldn't find anything similar to what you mentioned. Newest CCC is downloading as I type. This SHOULD be easy!!! :) but it never is.

Yep, it's always been kind of hidden, but it should be there. Somewhere.

OK, found it with the new version and a AMD support forum entry that was about doing the opposite. It mentioned what each entry did. Apparently, now you have to fill the circle for "centering" to get the desired affect. Funny, though; it isn't centered but is located in the bottom left corner. The briefing is still stretched but I can deal with that.

EDIT: Got a reply from ATI Tech Support after opening a second request and stating the the answer would make a difference on my card selection when I upgraded. Apparently there is another way where I tell it to scale and have the monitor preset for 4:3.

The eat of the reply: The GPU scaling option is available only through a DVI (digital) connection. Go to the catalyst control center (ccc - advance view), expand digital panel properties, under attributes, check enable GPU scaling, select maintain aspect ratio and apply the setting.

n order for gpu scaling to work, your being using a DVI connection and you must set the resolution first to the a 4:3 resolution. For example, if a game runs at 1280x1024 resolution, setting the resolution to 1024x768 for the desktop, enable gpu scaling and selecting maintain aspect ratio will provide black bars on the right and left side of the monitor.


I haven't tried it yet since the other way has worked satisfactorily. Guess I'll have to just to see.
