Removed USB joystick Saitek Av8r before loading, sound for menu but no sound for in game.
Will attempt to plug joystick in after loading of mission, see if that would work if not, I'm out of ideas. Had the same issue with this game before and with a different joystick.
For Single Player, try Reload found here: http://www.filefront.com/user/GabiLaser
Reload can help fix the sound problem in XP and in some cases in Vista. Also lets you add a constant wind effect and other cool goodies.
At the risk of letting my computer ineptitude shine through here, after downloading the Reload zip file, how do I install/use it?

place it into the RB3D folder (Mine: C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Red Baron Pack\Red Baron 3D), create a short cut of Reload.exe and move the shortcut to your desktop (or where you want for ease of use). That is it.

Thanks for the reply, Wailwulf. The mod works great. Appreciate it. :)
I found this site, proposing a special patch, of sorts, for this very Gog.com edition of the game.
You can download this little utily directly here. Once you've got the .zip file, extract it in you "GOG.com\Red Baron Pack\Red Baron 3D" folder ; before doing that, make a backup of your "Baron.exe" file, so as not to overwrite the original.
Then run the "RB3DXPfix.exe". Tick the "freeze preferences" box, then click the "fixRB3D sound" button, for either single or multiplayer, close the executable and thus, you'll be able to launch the game without having to worry about you joystick.
There is a bit of a drawback to this, though. In order to work, this modified .exe erases you preferences files each time you start the game. So if you want certain settings, set them using the original .exe, then fix it.

Uh, oh. Does that mean that the old XP no sound problem has not been automatically patched in the re-release (I just ordered it). I have a copy of the game but, even after patching for that, too fast a computer speed (>1 G) and some sort of Voodoo glide simulator patch, all seemed well until the first replay then it would crash after starting (which, for sound, has to be thru that patch each time) as soon as I clicked on campaign. Was hoping this re-release would prove a lot simpler to get running?
PS - I'm referring to the XP First Aid Kit Beta 101
