There is a new kickstarter for a Red Baron reboot. To me it looks absolutely awesome. DRM-free single player and a MOBA multiplayer component. It's by Damon Slye, the maker of the original. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they can do with this. Especially since World War One flight sims are a bit scarce... I can't think of anything from the last ten years except Rise of Flight. Check it out here
Jumped in this one the moment I heard about it yesterday.

Damon Slye is one of the great unsung designers of the 90's -- his sim designs basically are the template for so many classic sims, and we need that balance of playability vs. realism now more than ever.

I saw this yesterday ... am thinking of backing (would be my first) - thing that is holding me back is no guarantee of a Mac version :(
Anyone know if end users can run their own multiplayer servers?

There are a couple of others, both excellent in their own ways. Check out Over Flanders Fields and First Eagles 2. Over Flanders Fields is soon getting a greatly improved new version called Wings Over Flanders Fields.

I hope the new Red Baron project is a success!
Great! And they just announced that they plan Linux support.
It looks like this Red Baron will be run like World of Tanks and War Thunder are for their online aspect. The SP section is going to only have 30 Missions for the entire war, not have the non-linear campaigns the originals had.

Yes, the lack of singleplayer focus was a bit of a dissappointment for me too as are the Zelda-esque graphics.
Anyway from the looks of it it seems it is not going to make it. =(

I think the campaign is going to be non-linear:
Our vision for the single player campaign is to let you write your own story. Instead of a linear scripted story, the campaign will let you plot your own course through the war via randomly generated missions with engaging intermission activities. In between sky skirmishes, medals will be awarded, promotions gained, transfers requested, newspapers read, and (once you’ve made Captain) planes customized.
Hopefully it does have a dynamic campaign that is at least as nice as RedBaron 3D's. Taking some campaign touches from Rise of Flight, Fist Eagles, and other newer WWI sims like having to file kill claims (That don't always get validated) would be cool too.
Now the project is cancelled for the time being.

I'm not surprised. Looking at the videos and screenshots, this was going to be very much an arcade game, not a realistic flight sim in the spirit of Red Baron 3D. Graphics looked like they were from some colourful children's game, cockpits were completely fictional and they had several historical errors in their material, from aircraft models to newpaper articles.

In short, amateurish work.
Bummer, I hadn't looked into it much since I've never really bothered much with kicstarter. Bit of a shame that not only is it cancelled (for now?) but was leaning towards a much more arcadey/unrealistic slant.

Oh well, back to waiting/hoping for a Rise of Flight sale on steam or their own website.
I think that was overly critical of a project that was in alpha. I agree the graphics weren't great, but the gameplay was apparently meant to span the range of arcade-ish to realistic though the video did represent more of the former than the latter.
