i'm guessing this is more of a windows glitch than a Q2 bug, but it only happens after i shut down Q2...

...it almost always shows me the last two files/folders that i worked with on my desktop before i deleted or moved them then started the game.

e.g. i save a picture to my desk, MyPic.bmp and download a zip MyZip.zip - i delete the picture and move the zip to my archive folder.
i run Q2, play and then shut it down.
on my desk now is an icon each for MyPic.bmp and MyZip.zip
they have a size of 0 and no creation or modification date in Properties

if i refresh the destop, they disappear.

it's easily rectified and mostly harmless (i think) but definitely the 2nd oddest bug i've had this week**

(**prize for 1st oddest bug goes to Logitech Gaming Software, which installs a bad launch shortcut that prevents Photoshop's layer properties menu from opening)

---> forgot to mention - i'm not using the launcher or running any 3rd party engines. just running the Quake2.exe directly from a shortcut.

First. Install official 3.20. Second, better use Launcher GOG's even after 3.20 patch (GOG mess with files and mess exactly for base game - but that affect addons and for base game only if you start directly by exe).

Third. Thats deffinetly not by quake, especially if you start it from exe. Icons is clickable? DWM (Windows) bug cause of changing resolutions. Cached image.

Also, better remove LogiOptions soft. Why you need that? Controllers should work properly without it, macros almost dont needed.

Better ask Microsoft community. This is Windows Explorer bugs, and it not because game. Some software probably, but not Quake2.
Anyway it very strange and my logic\knowledge is not enough so something (change resolution) what i say here - maybe nonsense.

Btw, what resolution you set in Quake2? 1280x960, right? What your display resolution?

last question first - yeah that sounds about right, the largest res i could run without exceeding my native desktop res (1920x1080)

re Logitech driver - most hardware i've ever bought runs in a standard mode, and if you want all the pretty lights and extra fruit, you run a utility to turn them on.
my new keyboard is the opposite, it does this annoying RGB colour-cycling and key-pulsing thing and i need the utility running to get it to stay on just a single colour and not flash when i touch a key.

There is lot of problems with LogiOptions.exe\etc from Logitech. They dont have and at same time have some kind of overlay. Close that tool before starting the Quake2 or any oldest games. Check Task Manager Process(!) tab to see of no logi... .exe running.

For 1920x1080 you maximum for Quake 2 is indeed 1280x960.

I can suggest you most "lite" source-ports mods. Facelift mod and DirectQ2. DirectQ2 allow widescreen.
http://www.chebmaster.com/q2facelift/index.html
This is not allow resolution higher than 1280x960.

This one - allow widescreen
http://www.quaketastic.com/files/tools/windows/engines/DirectQII%202012-11-29.zip
But that require 1.0 version, here it is
http://www.gamesrevival.ru/files/DirectQII.zip (should be dll file here)

Using this i play on 1600x900 with my native 1080p.
To use this with GOG Laucnher - make copy of link and Launcher ini file. Open ini in Notepad, press Edit - Replace and replcace every quake2.exe with directqii.exe. Rename this new ini to DirectQ2Launcher.ini
Replce quake2launcher.ini with directq2laucnher.ini in link file.

Official old retail patch 3.20 is REQUIRED. GOG version are broken - not properly patched to 3.20.

yeah, as soon as i shut down the Logi util, that horrible rainbow colour cycling starts. i almost expect to see a herd of unicorns run across my screen.

actually during my travels i saw the name Yamagi a few times so i gave that a try, and it seems to be working pretty well.
