I just bought this game, but cannot play it. I can watch the intro video, use the menu, pick starting stats, and see a load screen. As soon as the load screen finishes, the game shuts off and a German error page pops up called "Walhalla Exception." I'm using Windows XP. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Could you please post some more system specs, especially what graphics card your using?
Not much of a "system," just a little netbook. Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset Family is what is listed under "Display Adapters" in device manager.
The same thing keeps happening to me, im running the game on a bog basic samsung nc10 netbook.
Well the FAQ claims its a space or memory problem.

So unless you guys both have less then 500mb of space left on your C: drive its probably the shared memory on the graphics chipset. It may be that its allowing too much memory to the graphics chipset that it doesn't recognise such a high amount.
Try opening something like firefox in the background a number of times so it takes up alot of your systems ram and try running the game then.
No dice, 104 open Firefox windows, and still the crazy German error message.
Hmm is this the first port royale and does you netbook support 1024x768 resolution?
Its just on the game page it says it needs that resolution to beable to run properly.
check the system requirements.

Could try adding the /windowed tag or -window to the games shortcut as suggested here
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/port_royale_series/playing_windowed/perm=4/#p_b_4
to see if running it windowed allows it to work.

That looks to be the problem, didn't bother to check the resolution. I guess I'll be playing this on my desktop. Thanks!
Thank you! running in window fixed the problem.
Only downside to window mode is scrolling with the mouse is a pain. but i can just use the map to move around.

Hey Ralackk, maybe you can also take a look at my problem. Its basicly the same problem as the other two people and I have tried to do the -windowed tag but the game keeps playing full screen. I'm also playing on a notebook with 1024x768 resolution and the 945 Family Chipset in it. I have tried using DXWnd to force a windowed view without succes. Thank you

Hey, I'll certainly try to help. Frist off I notice the link is actually dead now, must have happened after the site came out of beta. Are you adding a space between the games path and the -windowed tag on the target line?

I'm also experiencing this Walhalla Exception problem. Is it possible for you to repost the link instructions?

If you right click the games desktop icon and go to properties. Then on the Target line under the shortcut tab, add -window to the end of the line. Make sure you add a space between the information already there and the -window. Also make sure its outside the quotation marks.

It should look something like "C:\Games\Portroyale\Portroyale.exe" -window

I have tried several possibilities, like:

1 space, -window(ed)
2 space, -window(ed)
1 space, -w
2 space, -w

I'm trying to force a windowed mode now with 3D-Analyze v2.36b

Update: Using 3D-Analyze makes Port Royale run, although I am not able to see the whole screen (lol).

For somone who still has this problem after make sure the resolution is correct:

Check and make sure that hardware acceleration is turn on. For Windows XP:

Right click desktop
Properties
Settings Advanced
Troubleshoot

I gave up on this game because could not get it to work and decided to tinker a little more. Oh, well started playing patrician III and it is very good also.
