I installed the game and all the recommended mods....At the very first gameplay screen (when Morte comes to talk to to the Nameless One: i-e 10 seconds into the game), the game crashes with the following error message:

An assertion failed in F:Torment\Source\Chtin\\Chvidpal.cpp at line number 1124

Any help would be appreciated

I think it's a widescreen/ghostdogUI mod related problem.
Try a new clean install, then after each mod install try starting a new game and see if it's wirking properly.
I'm having the same problem. As soon as Morte flies over to me, the game crashes and the "An assertion failed [...] number 1124" error is displayed.

I tried reinstalling and playing around with different resolutions and it still doesn't work. One thing I noticed is that the game runs just fine even after I install bigg's widescreen mod. However, after I install Ghostdog's UI, it crashes with the assertion error.

I have the GoG version of the game and running it on Windows Ultimate x64.

If anyone can offer any hints on how to solve this, I'd give a bucket full of thanks :)
When I was messing around with the mods the other day, thanks to crashes of my own, I found out that once you've installed the widescreen mod, trying to reinstall it with another resolution seems to screw it up. The UI mod may or may not be part of that. If you're reinstalling the widescreen mod then reinstalling the UI mod on top of it, watch the whole thing and you may see the UI mod claim that the widescreen mod isn't actually installed.

Uninstalling Torment and deleting everything but your saves, then reinstalling it and reinstalling the widescreen mod with your desktop resolution, then the UI mod, may fix it for you - I know I had to do a clean install whenever I started messing with the widescreen mod.
I also bought P:T today and i have Win 7
Well the GoG version runs but i want for sure mods before i even play it for optimum exprience. But it's not so easy as i thought since i screwed up already and had to download it again :). Should i change the language to mine (German) before i install any mods ?

I'm having the same crashing problem with an asssertion failed and I haven't changed anything from default install. Gog still hasn't fixed this after all these years?!
