Much like the title says. I kind of like knowing what I am getting into.
Each faction has a storehouse where you can purchase unique items and spells specific to that faction. Many factions also have a network of contacts throughout the game who can provide you with additional information or help. Each faction also provides you with a special ability:

ANARCHISTS: you can infiltrate other factions and pose as one of their members, gaining access to many faction-specific quests and items (but not other special abilities from those factions)

DUSTMEN: you gain a bonus to armor class vs. undead creatures

GODSMEN: you gain a Charisma bonus

SENSATES: you gain the Sensory Touch ability (heal another while damaging yourself), as well as access to Sensate-only sensory stones which can restore more of your memories and provide extra experience bonuses

XAOSITECTS: no special abilities per se, although you'll be able to freely walk through some hostile areas without being attacked

There are no disadvantages in joining the factions, being in one doesn't prevent you from entering another.
Doing the quests for joining the Dustmen will grant some extra XP and access to their store for example and you can enter other factions afterwards.

Good info. Can you recomend a good place to look up the storehouse/contacts stuff? From my in-game experience the Sensates is my style. Gonna join them soonish.

This is the best list I have bookmarked, although it seems to be missing a few stores.

Just to clarify: If you are already a member of a faction and you join another, they will demand that you denounce the faction you are already in, so you can only be in one faction at a time. There is an exception: If you are an Anarchist, you can join other factions as a spy for the Anarchists.
You can get a few extra XP, quests and items if you join the Dustmen and Godsmen first before switching to Sensates but it's not essential.

It may be a little exploit, but you can switch from the Anarchist faction, while spying on another. The result will be e.g. Godsmen/Sensates at the same time.
