I have yet to play, its downloading as I type this. My question is, what are the different types of edged weapons? are there longswords/katanas/daggers or do they all look the same? I was gonna do a magic/katana kinda character because that's how I played through the Baldurs gate games (So fun!).

Items in PST are different from the items in standard RPGs like BG and this applies to weapons too. Just start playing unspoiled, you don't have to choose at the beginning, take what you find, edged weapons is not a bad choice to put profiency points into.

Note that 'edged' primarily refers to daggers, BTW.

Axes use their own proficiency, punch-daggers use fist proficiency, and swords are virtually absent from the game (apart from Dak'kon's blades that only he can use, there's only the two epic tier weapons, which can be morphed into pretty much whatever weapon class you want after you acquire them, so it's not really worth investing in Edged for those two).
