What is a good sequence for buffing your characters and then fighting effectively?

I'm in the Modron maze where (possible spoiler) I switched the maze to Hard difficulty. At this point I can't even advance one room without having the crap beaten out of my crew and having at least one killed.
I'm not a heavy RPG player so I'm weak in preparing and using my crew. Some advice would be great, because I love Torment, but I'm pretty much stalled.

Some questions:
* Can I assign spells and weapons before a battle, or is it best to pause the game, once I'm attacked and then click through spells and weapons.
* Does the character AI help or hinder during a battle? How does it work? Would I be better off "pointing" each character at a foe without AI but using weapons and spells I had chosen before the battle?

I could list more problems, but it is probably evident that I don't know the proper way to battle. Your advice would really help me. Nameless thanks you too.
Thanks,
Greg S

I always paused the game to select the next spells, had the AI enabled but also gave the commands manually.

Read the spell descriptions, check which ones help and last long enough for casting before combat, cast the long lasting ones first and the shorter lasting ones afterwards, use pause while buffing to avoid some buffs being always over when you cast the last ones.

What does your party consist of (characters, levels) ?
who's in your party and what class are you using for TNO?
