Hi,

I've just noticed something which feels odd about my Planescape character.

I've been trained up as a mage for a few hours now and I'm quite happily throwing spells at cranium rats. I was just browsing my character sheet to make sure everything was tickety-boo - and I noticed that my THACO was 20.

Now, I roughly know my way around a character sheet, having finished Baldur's Gate and having never gotten over the heartbreak of my Baldur's Gate II save games getting corrupted after some 40 hours.

But I can't make this tally:

I'm a mage with strength 12 (dexterity down at 9, could this be it? ). I've an uninspiring base THACO of 19.

I didn't develop any proficiencies as a fighter, so my only proficiencies are fist (+1) and edged weapons (+1).

I'm currently wielding a bone dagger - which, god help me in my innocence, I'm very proud of - which is an edged weapon offering me +1 THACO. It's also got a "+1 enchanted" stat on it - but I don't know what this is doing for me (if anything).

I reckon that should give me a THACO of at least 18 - maybe even 17 (does my low proficiency give me a bonus THACO, or merely an absence of a penalty?). Yet a big fat 2-0 is staring me in a the face, daring me to try and stab it. So why is my THACO so low? Where is my penalty coming from?

All ideas welcome :) This is no show-stopper - I'm just curious. I can try and send a save-game is anyone is REALLY curious.

Thanks folks!

Dexterity doesn't affect TNO's thac0, only very high strength does. 1 proficiency point only avoids a penalty. When you find Porphiron let him train you for the big bonus you get for the second proficiency point.
For calculating thac0 the best thac0 of the classes you have is chosen, so if you have have 5 fighter levels the base thac0 should be 16 for example.

It's possible that you suffer from negative thac0 effects like from the ice knife spell, its thac0 penalty lasts forever. You have to die to get rid of this spell effect. In my game Morte suffered from it until he died and got resurrected.

Thanks for the response kmonster - I appreciate the insight.

As it happens, I've a couple of times this evening. I've just checked my THACO again and it's dropped down to a more reasonable 18.

I think you've nailed it with Ice Knife. I've had a few of those thrown at me, and one of them must have been giving me the penalty. Good call on that one :)
The original version let you use your fighter thaco even if your had another class active. This was fixed in on of the fixpacks.
