the map should always be right side up. you may have to find more pieces of the map by visiting taverns and asking around or hunting down relevant people usually found at the governor's place in specific towns iirc. the towns vary so you have to pay attention to your convos and make notes. it'll also appear in your log for a while until new events move it down. i haven't played the pc version in a while (although i recently bought the gog version). i'm more familiar with the genesis version. pc version blows it away in nearly every aspect except fencing is better on the genesis imo. anyhow, hope this helps. good luck.
