Try changing the speed of the game.

Go to 'Options' at the top left of the screen and you'll see 'Speed Settings'. This can be altered from 10 - 100.

This. I set it to 60-70% and it runs smoothly.

Useful keyboard shortcuts:
[ = Slow game by 10%
] = Speed up game by 10%
