Hit ESC when the white screen comes up and the game will run. Change the game resolution in options to your monitor resolution and it shouldn't cause anymore problems.

Just replying to uptick this post. Hitting Esc through to the main menu saved me from hours of fruitless troubleshooting and worked perfectly.
