MailBoxAssassin: So for any of my fellow GOG'ers for someone like me who enjoyed the Penumbra games, Amnesia games, and other horror game will this game be worth it?
How does the GOG.com release stack up to other retailers like steam. I prefer to buy off GOG.com but sometimes I find more modern games don't get the love and care on here as they do on things like steam?
This game is worth playing. You will notice very quickly that what Outlast does well it does flawlessly, something that makes the instances where game design/mechanics is problematic all the more glaring. What Outlast does well it truly does flawlessly and what it does badly threatens to undermine all of that and break the game. With that in mind I firmly believe the game is worth playing and I was able to enjoy it. I also believe that it's a solid first game from Red Barrels who were woefully underfunded and underpowered (only one person was credited in QA).
The GoG release is solid and I would never, ever suggest that Steam takes care of their games. Valve has multiple examples of not vetting the games they sell or including what actually came with the game: in-game music (Quake 1 and expansions, Quake 2 and expansions), unfinished games (The War Z and Dark Matter, the latter being something that GoG sold as well and acted upon quickly and first), games with broken features (Sacred 2 was advertised as a multi-player game when that functionality wasn't present, took the game down with no notice and then eventually put it back up with a disclaimer about multi-player) and the dreaded 'Unknown Steam Error' that neither Valve nor game developers seem to want to accept responsibility for. My money is on the client just being bad -after all, Valve is on record saying that issues with Offline functionality are bug-related and not intended.
I respect what CD Projekt Group is doing with GoG but the more I experienced Valve/Steam the more I saw that was just glaringly wrong and the less I wanted to even game. The bottom line, my rant aside, is that the GoG release is solid and I encountered no issues.
