Original War defines obscure. I was lucky and discovered it back when Virgin was trying to get back into games and publishing a line of $20 titles from European developers.
Original War is one of the deepest RTS games I have ever played. It combines tactical squad strategy with RPG elements like Jagged Alliance and still manages to have the economy and base building of games like C&C with out sacrificing elements from either style. It is also one of the few RTS games I've seen with a truly branching campaign based on the player's in-game decision. The only knock against the game is very difficult. If you are an RTS veteran though, you should find the challenge refreshing.
