I discovered this workaround while installing on my Linux machine under WINE (Windows 8.1 and 10 compatibility), so hopefully this fix translates to improved functionality for modern Windows users, too. I had seen on PCGW that using dgVoodoo2 was required for modern graphics adapters, but still couldn't get past a 'blanked' menu to actually start the game. After successfully getting another older game to work, I decided to give that solution a try and the game started functioning with the dgVoodoo2 wrappers.
The additional file that helped was cnc-draw, which I'd seen helps with some of the older Infinity Engine games like IWD2 (https://github.com/FunkyFr3sh/cnc-ddraw) and is a drop in solution. I haven't tested yet if both dgVoodoo2 and cnc-draw synergize or if you can just use cnc-draw by itself. For the other game that was DX5-based, I did need both (I think the error in both cases was 'out of memory'). Good luck to you getting this old game running again!
update after an hour or so of playing: one conversation (go to lunch date with girlfriend) regularly crashes the game. I guess it's backed to being broken :\
