I downloaded and installed the game, but when I started it up, all I got was a black screen that completely froze my computer. I had to actually pull the battery on my laptop to reset it. What the hell? Also, how can I fix it?
No help? I paid money for this and I'd very much like to be able to play it. Now it just crashes when I load it. And yes, I'm running it as an administrator.
There's no need to get all worked up about it, these are forums for discussing the games, people in here are community members and GOG users, same as you, we are no tech support team. I can recommend some things you could try, but it's hard to give you any kind of advice when I don't know the particular specs of your computer.

Things you should check are:

a) make sure the game isn't installed under the 'Program Files' folder, install it under something like "C:\GOG Games\Abe's Oddysee";
b) mess a bit with compatibility options, under 'Properties', when you right-click on the game's executable;
c) do a clean install -- uninstall the game, restart your computer, install it again, preferably running the installer as administrator;

If all of this fails, be sure to submit a trouble ticket to GOG support. If they can't get the game to run on your computer within 7 days, you're entitled to a refund.

I'm sorry for snapping, but I always have to double to get a new thread noticed on the rare occasion that some goes wrong with a purchase. Also, I did pay money for the game, and I do like things I pay for to work, so I'm not sorry for that part. I'll definitely try the uninstall, though. Any particular reason it doesn't like Programs folder? I'm curious.
I'm not particularly tech-savvy, but from what I've learned in these forums during the past few months, Windows Vista and Windows 7, in particular, have strange user access restrictions when you install a program on the Program Files folder. I don't know why or what happens, specifically, but the truth is it worked for me once, and now I never install anything on that folder, unless it's some mandatory Windows thing.

I had already seen your thread, but since I didn't think I had anything to add, I didn't reply. There are people that get annoyed when you reply to troubleshooting threads with the kind of general advice I gave you, so I chose not to reply.
I know this is a long overdue reply, but things have been busy. I didn't notice until I went to try the reinstall, but I already had it installed to the folder you mentioned. I did the reinstall anyway and tried all those compatibility options (which I actually had before) and still no luck. What else can I do, guys? There has to be something. I love platformers and have heard so much about this series. I want to try this so bad.
I had the same issue and just adjusted the hardware acceleration 3 clicks from the right and it solved it for me. You can try it in different settings until it is solved. Hope this helps

oops, just noticed how old this post is. Sorry and hope you got it straightend out.
