Talked to Leslie, bought a ship, opened the contract screen to check if there'd be any contracts, talked to leslie again, says to get a contract, check to see if there are any contracts now, There are none.

Try travelling to another station and then go back to Leslie. You don't have to get a contract in that one station, anywhere will do :)

Also, make sure to pick up any licenses you see as that will get you more contracts.
